My son was engaged a year ago. The girl’s father asked for my bank account details and sent money as a token of good fortune for my son. He continued sending money after the engagement. However, we later realized there were cultural differences and the girl’s education qualifications (she holds a B.Ed degree) didn’t match what we expected. My son also dislikes her due to her behavior. His father now refuses to return the money and is threatening to file a dowry case and resort to local intimidation if the marriage doesn’t go ahead. Feeling pressured, I agreed to a wedding date of April 22nd, 2016. What should I do now?

The money sent by the girl’s father, regardless of the purpose, is not legally considered dowry under Indian law. However, the father’s threats of filing a dowry case and resorting to intimidation are illegal and constitute harassment. You should immediately contact the police to report the threats and seek legal advice to protect yourself and your son.
