My husband and I, from different castes (I’m general category, he’s OBC), got married in May 2015. We’re both working professionals, I’m 25 and he’s 29, and we live in different states. My family is threatening me with an honour killing and wants to trouble my in-laws. How can I legally protect both myself and my family from them?

You can file a complaint with the police under the Indian Penal Code for threats and harassment. Additionally, you can approach the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (if your husband belongs to a Scheduled Caste) or the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (if he belongs to a Scheduled Tribe) for legal assistance and protection. You can also seek a protection order under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
