My father, a retired army officer, bought a piece of land through a middleman in our village. We paid the money and got the land registered, even with the middleman signing as a witness. But a month later, we found out the “owner” was actually someone else, and the middleman had disappeared with all our money! We tried to contact him, and he admitted his crime, offering cheques that bounced. We filed a criminal case, and he got arrested, but was released on bail after a few months. He still refuses to return our money. What should we do now?

You can pursue the criminal case against the middleman and seek a civil suit for recovery of the land or its equivalent value. You can also explore options like filing a complaint with the Consumer Forum or the police regarding the bounced cheques.
