I’m a 26-year-old guy. I’ve been with my girlfriend for the past 5 years. We were serious about getting married and both promised to tie the knot. We even told our families and friends about our plans and went to events together as a couple. Now she’s backing out because her parents are putting pressure on her. I’m heartbroken and feeling lost. What can I do legally? Could I file a case for cheating or breach of promise to marry?

Under Indian law, a promise to marry is not legally enforceable unless there is a formal engagement ceremony or a written agreement. While you can’t file a case for cheating, you might be able to file a case for breach of promise to marry if you can prove a formal engagement ceremony or a written agreement. However, such cases are often complex and have a low success rate.
