We purchased a house with the top floor as our residence and the ground floor as an investment. There were some misunderstandings during the purchase, and we dealt directly with the seller without any real estate agent involved. Four to five months after moving in, we received a whopping Rs. 50,000 water bill for the ground floor. Apparently, the previous occupants hadn’t paid their water bills for three years, and the Delhi Jal Board informed us of this outstanding amount. What legal options do we have in this situation?

Under Indian law, you can attempt to recover the unpaid water bill from the previous occupants, as you are not legally responsible for their debts. You can approach the Delhi Jal Board to negotiate a payment plan or explore legal options to recover the amount from the previous occupants.
