My bag with my laptop and some important things was stolen at Nagercoil Junction. I reported it to the Tamil Nadu Police there, not the railway police, and they filed a case. They caught the thief and now my stuff is with them. They said I need to hire a lawyer to get it back, or they’ll appoint one and I’ll have to pay them. But my laptop is broken! Should I pay to get my things back, even though the laptop is unusable?

You are not legally required to pay a lawyer to retrieve your belongings. The police should return your property after investigating the theft and confirming ownership. The police cannot force you to hire a lawyer or pay for their services to get your belongings back.
