My aunt, a widowed Scheduled Caste woman, has lived in a 30×40 government plot in Bellary district, Karnataka for the last 25 years. She has built a 25×15 house on it with basic cement sheets. We’ve been paying our municipal taxes regularly. However, the house leaks badly during the monsoon. We tried building a small room on the remaining land but the Tahsildar and revenue inspector stopped us. We’re completely lost on what to do next. What can we do?

Your aunt’s long-term residence and regular tax payments give her strong grounds to claim ownership under the Karnataka Land Revenue Act. You can approach the Tahsildar and revenue inspector again, providing proof of her residence and tax payments. If they continue to obstruct, filing a case in the Civil Court seeking the right to construct on the plot may be an option.
