Living in a Chennai housing society, I’m facing a frustrating rule: visitors are banned after 6 PM. Even though I pay rent and am ready to take full responsibility for my guest, why does the association have the right to impose this restriction? Is there any legal recourse I can take to challenge this rule? Can I take action against the association for this?

Under Indian law, housing societies have the right to make reasonable rules for the welfare and safety of residents. This includes regulating visitor hours. However, the rule must be demonstrably reasonable and not discriminatory. You can challenge the rule through the society’s internal dispute resolution mechanism or file a complaint with the relevant authorities if the rule is deemed unreasonable or discriminatory.
