Namaste Sir,
I’m in a bit of a bind. Two years ago, someone gave me two cheque leaves worth around one lakh rupees. Unfortunately, they bounced, and I’m having trouble reaching the person. I’ve tried sending legal notices three times, but they’ve been returned as undeliverable because he refuses to accept them and I don’t have his current address. These cheques were issued by his private limited company in May 2014. What should I do now to recover my money? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Since you have proof of bounced cheques issued by a company, you can file a criminal complaint under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, in a court having jurisdiction over the company’s registered office. The court can order the company to pay the amount along with compensation and penal interest.
