My tenant left my house in April 2016, leaving two post-dated cheques – one for ₹10,000 and another for a larger amount. The cheques were dated May 25th. When I presented the ₹10,000 cheque on that date, the bank said payment was stopped by the tenant. I don’t know his current address and haven’t deposited the second cheque, fearing it’s also been stopped. What should I do?

You should initiate legal action against your former tenant. You can file a civil suit in a court of competent jurisdiction seeking recovery of the rent due, including the bounced cheque amount and any other damages. You can also file a criminal complaint under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act for the bounced cheque.
