My friend owes me money, promising to clear three cheques by December 31st. One bounced a month ago, and he’s been making excuses. He’s now promising to pay online on specific dates in December: 12th, 19th, and 29th. He’s been changing his mind before, though. Should I wait until the end of December or take legal action now? What’s the best way to handle this situation in India?

Under Indian law, you can file a legal suit for recovery of the cheque amount as soon as the cheque bounces. However, you can attempt to settle the matter amicably by sending a legal notice and demanding payment. If he fails to comply by the end of December, you can proceed with legal action.
