I lent money to a friend in August 2012 and gave them an undated company cheque as security. I’ve since given many other cheques to different people and settled my friend’s debt in cash. We didn’t keep proper bank records. Now, my friend claims they’ve lost the security cheque and can’t find it. I’m worried about this undated cheque and want to get it back. What should I do?

Since you settled your friend’s debt in cash and have no proper bank records, it’s difficult to prove the cheque was indeed given as security. You can try requesting your friend to issue a written statement acknowledging the debt was settled. If they refuse, you could consider issuing a public notice in a local newspaper to declare the cheque invalid and prevent its misuse.
