How To File A Case Under The Right To Information Act

To file a case under the Right to Information (RTI) Act in India, follow these steps:

  1. Write a clear application on plain paper, including your name, address, and the specific information sought. You do not need to provide reasons for your request.
  2. Include the application fee, which is typically nominal. Payment can be made via cash, demand draft, or Indian postal order. The fee for filing a Right to Information (RTI) application in India is ₹10, as prescribed by the RTI Rules, 2012. You can pay this fee using cash, a demand draft, an Indian postal order, or online through various payment methods, including internet banking and credit/debit cards.
  3. Send your application to the relevant State Public Information Officer (SPIO) or Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) of the concerned public authority. Individuals below the poverty line can submit a copy of their BPL certificate to waive any fees.
  4. The SPIO/CPIO must respond within 30 days. If the information pertains to life or liberty, the response time is 48 hours.
  5. If your request is denied or not responded to, you can file an appeal with the first appellate authority. This is within 30 days of the decision.
