What Is A FASTag?

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system in India that allows drivers to pay toll fees electronically without having to stop at the toll plaza. FASTag is a prepaid RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag that is affixed to the windscreen of a vehicle. When the vehicle passes through a FASTag-enabled toll plaza, the toll amount is automatically deducted from the linked prepaid account, allowing the vehicle to drive through without stopping to make a cash payment. Here is more on how to check your FASTag balance:

What Are The Benefits Of Using FASTag?

The benefits of using FASTag include:

  1. As you pass through toll plazas, the system automatically deducts toll charges from your linked account or prepaid wallet.
  2. No need to carry cash or stop at toll booths, making payments smoother and quicker.
  3. You can easily purchase FASTag online or at toll plazas and recharge it using various payment methods, including credit/debit cards, NEFT, and RTGS.
  4. Dedicated FASTag lanes reduce congestion and waiting times at toll plazas, saving time and fuel.
  5. Accepted at over 750 toll plazas across India, making it useful for travel on various highways and roads.
  6. Notifications are sent after every payment, allowing you to track your toll expenses easily.
  7. Reduces fuel consumption and emissions by minimising waiting times at toll plazas.
  8. You can monitor your account balance, recharge, and view transaction history through online portals or mobile apps

Can You Link Multiple FASTags To A Single Vehicle?

No, you cannot link multiple FASTags to a single vehicle under the current “One Vehicle, One FASTag” rule implemented by NHAI:

  1. A vehicle owner can now use only one active FASTag for one vehicle.
  2. Acquiring multiple FASTags for a single vehicle is not permitted.
  3. To check the status of FASTags linked to your vehicle, visit the NPCI website, enter your vehicle details, and view the status of all linked FASTags.

What Are The Consequences Of Using Multiple FASTags To A Single Vehicle?

The consequences of using multiple FASTags for one vehicle are as follows:

  1. Only One FASTag Can Be Active: If a vehicle has multiple FASTags, only the most recently acquired one will be activated.
  2. Users with multiple FASTags cannot recharge their wallets.
  3. Users can utilize the existing balance for toll transactions until their tags are marked as “Low Balance” and subsequently blocked.
  4. KYC Compliance: Each FASTag must have a complete Know Your Customer (KYC) process. Incomplete KYC will result in notifications and may lead to deactivation of the FASTag.
