FASTag is a prepaid rechargeable RFID tag that is affixed to the vehicle’s windscreen. When the vehicle passes through a toll plaza, the FASTag is detected by RFID readers and the toll amount is deducted automatically from the linked account.

Here is more on how to apply for a FASTag.

Which Law Is FASTag Governed By?

FASTag is governed by the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008 and the National Highways Authority of India Act, 1988. The National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008 provide the legal framework for collecting tolls on national highways, including the use of FASTag for electronic toll collection. The National Highways Authority of India Act, 1988 established the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) which is responsible for the development, maintenance and management of national highways in India. NHAI has implemented the FASTag system across national highways.

How to Apply For A FASTag?

Here are the steps to apply for FASTag:

  1. Gather the required documents.
  2. Choose how to apply- whether through a digital payment app like Paytm, upload documents, make payment, FASTag delivered to your address or at a bank that offers FASTag, you will have to fill an application form, submit documents, make payment, FASTag delivered.
  3. At a toll plaza POS terminal: carry documents for verification, FASTag will be fixed on vehicle windshield
  4. FASTag can be applied at select shops in the Paytm banking correspondent network

  6. If applying through HDFC Bank online: Log on to the HDFC Bank FASTag portal, Fill in your details, make the payment, FASTag will be delivered to your doorstep in 6-14 working days
  7. Link your FASTag to a prepaid account like Paytm Wallet for automatic toll deductions

Which Documents Are Required For Application?

To apply for a FASTag in 2024, you will need the following documents:

  1. Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC)
  2. Valid ID proof (such as PAN card, Aadhaar card, Passport, Voter ID, or Driving Licence)
  3. Passport-sized photograph of the vehicle owner

For corporate/commercial vehicles, you may also need:

  1. Company PAN card
  2. Board resolution/authorization letter (if required by the issuing agency)
  3. GST certificate (if applicable)

The documents needed may vary slightly depending on the FASTag issuing agency or provider, so it’s advisable to check their specific requirements on their official website or contact them directly.

How Many Days Does It Take To Get Your FASTag Delivered?

The typical delivery time for a FASTag after applying is:

  1. Within 7 working days from the time of purchase to your address
  2. Within 5 working days to the registered address
  3. Can be delivered in as little as 1-2 days, depending on the provider
  4. Some providers like Swiggy Instamart can deliver a FASTag in under 10 minutes directly to your doorstep

Can I Apply For FASTag If My Vehicle Is Not Registered?

Yes, you can still apply for a FASTag even if your vehicle is not registered in your name. Here are the key steps:

  1. Contact the previous owner and request them to deactivate the existing FASTag linked to their name. If they recharged it through PhonePe using the registration number, they may not know the specific phone number associated with the tag.
  2. Visit the FASTag issuer’s website (e.g. Paytm, IDFC First Bank) and apply for a new FASTag. Provide the vehicle’s current registration certificate (RC) in your name.
  3. Submit the required documents, which typically include the RC, your ID proof (Aadhaar, PAN card, etc.), and a passport-sized photo.
  4. Complete the application process either online or by visiting an offline point-of-sale (POS) terminal or bank branch.
  5. Once the FASTag is issued and delivered, affix it on your vehicle’s windscreen as per instructions. It will be activated within 24 hours for use at toll plazas
  6. Some issuing agencies may require a letter of authorization from the vehicle owner allowing you to apply for the FASTag.
  7. For commercial vehicles, you may need to provide extra documents like the company PAN card, GST certificate (if applicable), and a board resolution authorising you to apply for the FASTag

What Can One Do If Their FASTag Is Blacklisted?

If authorities have blacklisted your FASTag, it means they have temporarily deactivated your tag, preventing its use for toll payments at toll plazas.

This can happen due to several reasons:

  1. Insufficient funds in your FASTag account
  2. Incomplete or unverified KYC documentation
  3. Discrepancies between vehicle details provided and the national vehicle registry
  4. Technical errors or glitches in the system
  5. Violations or offences registered against your vehicle by law enforcement agencies

To reactivate a blocklisted FASTag:

  1. Ensure your FASTag account is adequately funded with at least the minimum required balance
  2. Log into your FASTag portal and check the status. If still blocklisted, contact customer support
  3. Provide the FASTag details and transaction evidence to the customer support to resolve the issue

Always maintain sufficient balance in your FASTag account to avoid future blacklistings and ensure a smooth journey on India’s highways

Can I Use FASTag For Petrol Pumps Transactions?

Yes, you can use FASTag for petrol pump transactions. FASTag, which was initially used only for toll payments, can now be used to make digital payments for fuel purchases at select petrol pumps operated by Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) .

To use FASTag for fuel payments, you need to link your FASTag to an ICICI Bank account.

Once you set up your FASTag, you can drive up to the designated FASTag lane at participating petrol pumps, fill up your tank, and the system will automatically deduct the payment from your linked account.

This FASTag-based fuel payment offers several benefits, including:

  1. Cashless and contactless transactions for improved hygiene
  2. Faster transactions with no need to wait in queues
  3. Consolidated statements for both toll and fuel payments
  4. Exclusive rewards and discounts offered by the banks and oil companies

Currently, the FASTag fuel payment facility is available at select HPCL outlets, and is expected to be rolled out at IOCL and BPCL pumps soon . To use this service, you need to download the HP Pay app and activate FASTag fuel payment for your vehicle

How To Update Your Address When It Changes On FASTag?

Here are the steps to update your address if it changes after applying for FASTag:

  1. Log in to the FASTag portal of the bank that issued your tag using your registered mobile number and password.
  2. Go to the ‘My Profile’ section and click on the ‘KYC’ tab.
  3. Update your new communication address in the required fields.
  4. Keep your address proof document handy like Aadhaar card, driving licence, passport etc.
  5. After filling in the new details, click ‘Submit’ to update your address.
  6. If you are unable to update the address online, you can also send an email to the bank’s customer support from your registered email ID. Attach a duly filled FASTag maintenance form along with a valid address proof document.
  7. You can track the delivery status by contacting the bank’s customer care numbers

Can We Use FASTag For Parking At Airports?

Yes, you can use FASTag for parking at airports in India. Several major airports have implemented FASTag-based parking payment systems to improve efficiency and convenience for travellers.

Some key points:

  1. Kochi International Airport, Ahmedabad Airport, and Lucknow Airport have all introduced FASTag-based parking systems.
  2. The FASTag system allows drivers to enter and exit the airport parking lots without stopping to make cash payments.
  3. The system automatically detects the RFID tag on the vehicle and deducts the parking fee from the linked FASTag account.
  4. This helps reduce congestion and waiting times at the parking entrances and exits. Dedicated FASTag lanes are provided for faster movement.
  5. Passengers can also book parking slots in advance through mobile apps and have the fees automatically deducted via FASTag.
  6. The FASTag parking system is being rolled out at more airports across India to improve the overall travel experience.
