What Are the Required Documents to File Income Tax Returns Online?

  1. PAN Card – Mandatory for tax filing.
    Aadhaar Card – Linked with PAN as per government regulations.
  2. Form 16 – Issued by employers to salaried individuals.
  3. Form 26AS – Annual tax statement available on the Income Tax portal.
  4. Bank Account Details – Required for tax refund processing.

What Are The Steps To File Income Tax Returns?

  1. Visit the official website of the Income Tax Department: www.incometax.gov.in.
  2. Click on ‘Login’ and enter your PAN, password, and captcha code to sign in.
    If you are a first-time user, register using your PAN and create an account.
  3. Choose the relevant ITR form based on your income source:
    ITR-1 (Sahaj) – For salaried individuals earning up to ₹50 lakh.
    ITR-2 – For individuals and HUFs with income from capital gains or multiple properties.
    ITR-3 – For individuals with business or professional income.
    ITR-4 (Sugam) – For taxpayers under the presumptive taxation scheme
  4. Click on “File Income Tax Return” and select the Assessment Year and Filing Type (Original or Revised Return).
  5. Choose “Online” as the filing mode.
    Enter income details, deductions, and tax payments carefully.
  6. Verify the pre-filled data with Form 16, Form 26AS, and other relevant documents.
    The system automatically computes your tax liability
  7. If tax is payable, pay it using Challan 280 on the e-filing portal and enter the details.
  8. If excess tax has been paid, a refund will be processed.
  9. Carefully review all the details to ensure accuracy
  10. Click on “Submit” to file your return.
    E-Verify the ITR
  11. After submission, verify your ITR using one of the following methods:
    Aadhaar OTP.
    Net Banking.
    Electronic Verification Code (EVC) via bank account, demat account, or ATM.
  12. Sending a signed physical copy of ITR-V to CPC, Bengaluru (if not e-verifying online).
