What Is The Meaning of Motor Vehicle

A motor vehicle means any vehicle used or capable of being used for road transport. It is mechanically propelled, no matter what energy source it uses. However, vehicles running on fixed rails or electricity such as trams or trolley buses do not fall under this definition.

What Is A Driver and Driving Licence

A driver is a person who drives or has control over a motor vehicle. It also includes a person steering a vehicle drawn by another motor vehicle. A driving licence is an official document issued by a competent authority. It gives legal permission to drive motor vehicles, either generally or for certain types of vehicles.

What Is A Registration Certificate and Owner

Every vehicle must have a registration certificate. This document certifies that the vehicle has been registered under the Act. The owner of a motor vehicle is the person in whose name the vehicle is registered. The term also includes the legal possessor, and in cases of lease, hire-purchase, or hypothecation, the person in possession.

What Are The Types of Carriages and Public Vehicles

A contract carriage is a motor vehicle hired to carry passengers for an agreed fare. It operates under a contract for the use of the entire vehicle. A goods carriage refers to a motor vehicle designed or adapted for carrying goods. It also includes vehicles used for goods even if not originally designed for that purpose. A public service vehicle is one that carries passengers for hire or reward. It includes motor cabs, stage carriages, and contract carriages.

What Is A Permit and Learner’s Licence

A permit is official authorization from the transport authority. It allows a transport vehicle to operate on public roads. A learner’s licence is temporary and allows a person to practice driving on public roads for specified types of vehicles.

What Is Light and Heavy Motor Vehicles

A light motor vehicle includes transport vehicles or omnibuses with gross weight not more than 7,500 kg. This category covers private cars, jeeps, and light goods carriers. Heavy goods vehicles are goods carriages with gross or unladen weight above 12,000 kg. Heavy passenger motor vehicles such as buses also fall in this category if their weight exceeds 12,000 kg.

Other Important Terms

Axle weight means the total weight transmitted by all wheels attached to an axle. Gross vehicle weight refers to the maximum weight allowed, including the load. These terms are essential for enforcing safety and traffic rules.

Conclusion

The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 uses these definitions to regulate licensing, registration, insurance, and penalties. By understanding these key terms, drivers can follow the law with clarity and avoid unnecessary legal issues.
